Laser Photo Rejuvenation

Laser Photo Rejuvenation is a skin treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat various skin conditions and reverse the effects of photo-aging, such as facial lines and wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, age-spots etc. The treatment causes skin damage at controlled rate in the targeted areas causing the skin in those areas to heal itself by creating new skin cells. The process also stimulates collagen production, thus making your skin more soft, smooth and supple.

IPL Laser Photo Rejuvenation is one of the three types of skin rejuvenation. The other two types of photo rejuvenation are chemical rejuvenation – the one which uses chemical peels to enhance skin tone and texture – and thermal rejuvenation – the one that uses radio frequency waves to induce a thermal effect in the skin.

Laser photo rejuvenation is a 30-minute procedure performed in the clinic. A beam of intense pulsed light is used to penetrate deep into the skin to disassociate molecular bonds between the top two skin layers, epidermis and dermis. Besides disassociating the molecular bonds, it also induces controlled wounds on the treated skin. When the bond between the two layers breaks, the upper, damaged layer gradually peels off, revealing fresh and smooth skin underneath. In the meanwhile, the wounds caused by the light beam prompt the skin to heal quickly by creating new cells and producing more collagen.

The treatment causes minimal discomfort, but that is bearable. A topical numbing cream may be applied to further minimize the discomfort. After the procedure mild redness and swelling may occur on the treated areas, but that is not a serious problem. It subsides shortly (within a couple of hours). You will be able to see the outcome immediately after the treatment but maximum results can be seen 7 to 10 days following treatment.

Anyone with photo-aging symptoms, including blotchy skin, sun damage or facial wrinkles and creases is a candidate for IPL laser photo rejuvenation. Those who have large pores or struggling with freckles and blemishes may also benefit from Intense Pulsed Light therapy. However people with dark complexion or tanned skin are advised to avoid laser photo rejuvenation, since it may cause skin discoloration.
