Snoring Treatment Sleep Apnea in Dubai, Abu Dhabi

We all need a healthy and deep sleep to relax at night. But sometimes we cannot sleep peacefully because our breathing is disturbed and often prevents us from having a nice deep sleep. Abnormal breathing leads to snoring which can be loud sometimes. Sleep apnea is a common cause of loud snoring and becomes a major health issue if left untreated.

Fortunately, it is treatable in Dubai at Laser Skin Care Clinic.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder and often causes loud snoring. It happens when your breathing stops and starts at different intervals while sleeping. Sleep apnea can also lead to other health issues such as heart disease, lung disease, depression, and diabetes. Therefore, it’s very important to identify and treat the problem before it does any damage.

Depending on the symptoms there are three types of sleep apnea

Types of sleep apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

  • Narrowing or blocking of upper airways.
  • Airflow stops through your throat 5 times(at least 10 seconds each time) every hour and then starts again
  • It may lead to heart failure, brain disorders, snoring, and low blood pressure.

Central Sleep Apnea

  • Happens when the breathing control center of the brain doesn’t work well
  • Upper airways are narrowed or wholly blocked
  • Causes weak memory, sleeplessness, and finding it hard to focus

Complex Sleep Apnea

  • The combined form of obstructive and central sleep apneas
  • Central apnea symptoms appear after OSA has been cured by Positive airway pressure(PAP) therapy
  • Breathing stops more than 5 times per hour
  • No certain cause

Symptoms

If you have the following symptoms then you have sleep apnea

  • Loud Snoring
  • Morning headache
  • Irritability
  • Memory loss

  • Wake-up stroke syndrome
  • Hard to breathe while sleeping
  • Waking up at night to urinate (nocturia)
  • Sleeping with your mouth open and saliva drops from your mouth (drooling)

Causes

The causes of sleep apnea vary from person to person but common causes are

  • Narrow or crowded upper airway
  • Gaining weight for a long time
  • Poor response from the muscles that control breathing function
  • Very sensitive respiratory control system

Who is at risk?

The following factors put you at risk of having sleep apnea

Heart problems: People with heart failure are more prone to getting sleep apnea.
Age: Chances for sleep apnea increase with age.
Gender: Men have more chances of having sleep apnea than women.
Hormonal changes: Hormones control the size and shape of the throat. Any increase in them puts you at risk.
Obesity: unhealthy increase in weight increases the chances of having sleep apnea too. There are many Fat Reduction Treatments at our clinic in Dubai

Diagnosis

You can diagnose it on your own. Check your breathing while sleeping with the help of someone in your house. If you snore loudly and have all or some of the symptoms mentioned above then you need to see a doctor.

The following clinical methods are used

Polysomnography: detects changes in the brain, lungs, heart, and physical movements while you sleep. Neck pressure should also be checked for better results.
Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography: two belts are tied around the neck and stomach to record the respiration rate.
Thermistor: nasal device inserted through your nostrils to check the airflow.
Electromyography: detects muscle response of chest muscles, jaws, and forehead for any pressures.

Treatment options for Sleep Apnea and Snoring

There are various methods to cure sleep apnea depending upon the intensity. Sometimes home remedies work. If the symptoms don’t go away then therapies, devices, and surgeries are used.

Home remedies

  • Changing your sleeping positions and tying something hard on your back
  • Oral devices adjust your tongue and jaw in such a way that you breathe freely while sleeping
  • Regular exercise maintains smooth blood flow and decreases fats in your body which helps you breathe easily
  • Treating nasal congestion may remove the blockage in your lungs which is disturbing your breathing

Therapies and Devices

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)

A most common machine for treating sleep apnea. Mostly used for heart patients. It uses a mask connected to a device that pumps room air into your nose at a fixed pressure. In this way, your upper airway remains open during sleep.

Bilevel-positive airway pressure (BiPAP)

Used for more serious sleep apneas. High pressure air is pumped through a mask or nasal plugs into your upper airway. It lowers the pressure when you breathe out.

Automatic positive airway pressure (APAP)

They are like CPAP but not as much used. It increases the pressure when it senses disturbed breathing and lowers the pressure to normal when the breathing restores. It is prescribed for patients for whom CPAP does not work.

Adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV)

Uses masks, nasal devices, and ventilators like other machines. It is one of the latest technologies for treating sleep apnea. It offers automatic adjusting of air pressure according to your breathing pattern. The pressure increases when breathing is unstable and decreases when breathing is normal.

Surgeries

Tracheostomy: opens upper airways by making a hole in the neck and putting a tube inside that eases breathing.
Bariatric surgery: removes fats in upper airways and allows smooth airflow. Good for obese people.
Tonsillectomy: removes swollen tonsils that block the airways. Good for children.
Nasal surgery: cleans your nose for any blockages and makes way for airflow.
Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation: plants an impulse generator in the chest to help the brain regulate chest muscles. Treats central sleep apnea.
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty: removes extra tissue at the soft palate by a blade decreasing upper airway narrowing. Performed for curing OSA.
Other surgeries include: Maxillomandibular advancement, hypopharyngeal procedures, and palatal implants.
