Laser Treatments for Skin Problems

Laser treatments have certainly revolutionized Skin Care treatments as they can effectively correct a wide range of skin problems. Some consider laser treatments to be the best solution for skin issues. Whether this assumption is correct or not, we shall dig in a little deeper to learn more.

Which skin conditions can be treated with laser?

Laser treatments can correct a large number of skin-related conditions. These include fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, hyperpigmentation issues, acne, and other kinds of scars. It can also work wonders in getting rid of unwanted body hair. Although tattoos are not a skin condition, they too can be taken care of with laser.

How does the laser work?

Laser treatments vary in different skin conditions. When taking care of pigmentation issues, it works to break down the pigmentation in order to allow the body to remove it afterward. In treating fine lines and wrinkles, as well as scars, skin resurfacing lasers, are used which remove the damaged top layer to allow healthier skin to come up on top. They also work on allowing better production of collagen and elastin in the skin.

In the case of skin laxity, the laser is used to work at the deeper layer of the skin where it provides the right set of conditions for it to produce a greater amount of elastin and collagen. To treat unwanted hair, laser targets the melanin in the follicles to heat them up and remove their ability to grow hair in the future. The tattoos can be removed with laser as well as the pigmentation is broken down and the immune system can remove it from the body on its own.

Is it a painful treatment option?

Unlike common though, the laser treatments are generally free from pain. In order to numb down any sensation of discomfort, topical anesthetics and cooling gels are applied prior to the treatment. In some cases, cool air is also blown during the treatment to make it even better. The most sensation of pain that is felt during these treatments is similar to a light rubber band snapping against the skin.

Are results instant?

Some improvement can be seen instantly but the final results take time. Each of the above-mentioned treatments needs to be repeated a few times to get the desired results. Generally, four to six sessions are enough though at times more may be needed depending on the condition and its extent.

Side effects and downtime

The side effects associated with laser treatments are mild and temporary. Common side effects include swelling and redness in the treated area along with itching. Photosensitivity is developed so avoiding the sun and wearing sunscreen when going out during the day is very important. In some rare cases, bruising in the treated areas can also develop.

Generally, there is no downtime though that can vary in the case of different types of treatments. Even if there is any downtime, it is brief and a person can get back to his or her work within a few days. Check with your doctor to know if there is any downtime with your treatment or not.
